Whales' Island Video finally out

Share

Indelirium records finally released the final edit for Whales’ Island “Opening Words” video clip. As some might remember the shooting of the videoi took place in early february, while Bologna was facing a snow storm and the edit and direction were in the hand of Stanga. In these warm days of springtime it’s fun to see these 5 heroes act in the cold and wet weather of the red city. Hope you’ll like the photography :D

Less talk, more Rock. Enjoy the video.

While springtime seems finally on the way, Stanga, is spending the best days of this winter editing on his workstation. One month and 20° centigrades away from the shooting days in early february our stakanovist is almost ready with the final cut of Whales’ Island “Opening Words” Video. To cut the wait, he even spent some time to release a short teaser… and I’m putting it here for everyone to enjoy.
ENJOY!

Whales' Island Video Shooting

Whales' Island - Video IntroIn the middle of the winter, while Bologna is facing one of the most aboundant snow falls of the past 100 years, “Whales’ Island“, Sicily’s pride, met in the city to shoot the video of their “Opening Words” from new EP “Chronicles of Pretenders”; Stanga, enrolled as director, entrusted me the role of Director of Photography.

We planned two days of shooting and laid out an aproximate script: close references to the lyrics’ meaning, dolly movements, contrasted illumination and hard backlights… but the weather changed and when the snow started to fall everything turned to “improvisation”… No Problem: working with the band was very easy as they’re all good people, flexible, patient (tolerant) and creative.

We spent the first day shooting outdoors, in Bologna downtown, under heavy snow. Some of the members were asked to stand still under the snow without coat, in sweater at minus 10° C, other had to walk back and forth of slippy streets while one of them had to play his guitar (whitout coat) on a narrow, slippy, snowy slope street.

Day two, in spite of forecasts, was sunny and warm (minus 2° C) and gave us the chance to shoot some of the planned scenes in even more interesting location. One of these was a suburbs’ train station were one of the members had to wait 15 minutes still in 15 cm of snow for a train to leave the station to shout his part. We then spent the rest of the day in a reharsals room to shoot some live scenes.

Directing the photography is taking care of framing, camera movements, subject movements related to framing and camera position, lighting and deciding the mood of the scenes… Lot of nice duties that left me the time to shoot the making of. And here are some of the pictures (more available here). I know it’s not a trailer, but I hope it will whet your appetite while the editing is done. Stay tuned for updates

The EP is Co-Produced by Indelirium Records and No Reason Records, and is available in the labels’ respective e-shops.

Birra Hops... Riccione's beer in late autumn

Share

Hops Beer RiccioneOne of the most requested shootings in the past year have been food and venues shooting… two of the most underrated subjects a photographer can face. Both require knowledge of lighting techniques, strobe and continuous lighting and a complete collection of strobes and light modifiers. Icing on the cake, one of the last assignment of the year was a combo of the two: a complete covering of a venue, a beer/burger restaurant on the adriatic coast, a sets of pictures for the panoramic 360° VR view and some pictures portraying the beers in the context and it’s brewing at the venue. Here’s one of the pictures from that day.

Linterno new Single out NOW on iTunes Store

It’s not a shooting, nor a job I’ve been doing on the past days… it’s my band’s first single available on iTunes. You can check it out by clicking on the image on the left!!! Enjoy!

Linterno - New Video out NOW!!!

Finally it’s out! Few hours and it’s already over 100 views. If I think back to the shooting days, being the director of fotography in a video you act in is far easier than be the photographer of your own band’s promo shooting. And there are all the pros of team working! Enjoy!!!

Linterno Promo Shooting

Taking pictures of bands has always been my aim and one of the things that introduced me to serious photography back in 2002. I love it as much as playing guitar in my band. So, when your band is approaching the release of a new record you know that it’s time to enter the photo studio and stand on the set… on the other side of the camera. And here’s what happened: Linterno, the band I play in, is going to publish its second full length and needed the pictures for both the booklet and the press pack. We had an whole (october) afternoon to shoot and posed both in the studio and its premises (railways, gardens, suburbs…). Luckily my wife, Marjana, is a brilliant assistant and allowed us to work fast by checking every picture and shooting at the right moment. Here’s a classical picture.

In early April, I spent a week in Rieden’s OstBayernHalle for (and with) Andrea Bonaga to cover the NRHA European Futurity. NRHA, the hosting association and assigner, requested us an insider view of the event and, while Andrea spent most of his time shooting the races (as he is a world famous master in western riding photography), I spent most of the time producing images to report the background, the feelings and the people of the event. The picture on this page can be called “Enter Judges” and is now the Inside Back Cover of May’s Issue of NRHA Reiner (USA).

As usual, the picture is credited to “Andrea Bonaga – andreabonaga.it” even if he is visible in the top right of the picture, ready to shoot the Futurity Open Final

The picture I’m posting today is a fast edit of one of the pictures that will be used for an ad. They asked me to shoot some client made Ice Cream and I figured out that a good way to have it look interesting was shooting the way you can see here. I’m sorry for the huge watermark but even if these pictures are not the best from my shootings but just a sample for my blog, I’ve had some of them used for commercial purposes without any permission.

NRHA European Futurity Event gallery

I’m in kreuth (Germany) in the OstBayernHalle, to cover, along with Andrea Bonaga the NRHA European Futurity, one of the main european events about Reining (western horse riding). We’re the official photographers and we cover both the races and the social life, so one of the dues we have is to produce miscellanea pictures portraiting the venue, the main actors and the people behind the scenes.

While roaming around looking for an image to satisfy the press office requests I ran in this sight. I realized some shots, with a competitor enterning, spinning, sliding stopping and exiting the arena and when back for selection, I cropped a wide angle (12mm) picture to this panoramic version of the empty arena that was later selected as leede for the homepage of the event’s website. Here’s the shot. More are available on the website’s gallery.

As usual, for western riding pictures, all images are credited as “Andrea Bonaga – andreabonaga.it”.

Today Stanga published on his Vimeo the final edit of the video of the song “Ink Stains and Incidents” by From Plan to Progress. Here’s the video (I’m protesting right now for the missing credits)

It’s been a while… I forgot to update this blog, even though I wrote some notes about the assignments I went through in this winter. I’ll try to sum everything up and post the missing posts. Today’s assignment (well, actually februrary 24′s) was a shooting with the english punk rock band From Plan To Progress. I’ll write about that soon…  As of today, I’m done with selection and the pre-post production of some pictures… here’s one of them.

From Plan to Progress… Shooting Afternoon

Share

Today I had a busy afternoon. The assignment was for “No Reason Records” and the subject was the British band “From Plan to Progress”. Mine was a double role: photographer and director of photography for the video shooting of their new song “Ink Stains and Incidents”, directed by my friend Stanga. There were two locations and both offered multiple situations. We started everything at the XM 24 in the suburbs of Bologna. The schedule propted us the first scenes of the video: EXT – XM24 – Afternoon. I put the set in complete backlight (photographers’ mania) and prepared some reflecting panels to control the light. While the shooting was proceeding I set up my set nearby and took some pictures of the video shooting.  Then the schedule went on: EXT – XM24 – Late Afternoon, it was time to do some photography. Working with this band has been great. I had 3 different locations around the squat and we’ve been able to get good photos from each of them.

As soon as we were done with the pictures it was time to move towards the studio for the final takes of the video, for the shooting on white backdrop and to feed the band.

The video set up was quite easy as on a studio the light is exactly what you want with no parasite light coming from anywhere. Stanga and I had the time to shoot each member of the band separately as both of us needed this kind of situation. And to conclude I had half an our to shot all of them on the white backdrop in a light usually used for fashion. In the end the band started joking on the set and I had the opportunity to get this last picture.

Milan's Restaurant

Share

Being born in this area, I’m always happy to come back for work. I was hired by a web agency to produce some pictures for the new website of a restaurant in Milan. During the briefing I realized that the time available to shoot for the number of pictures/subject required wasn’t enough for one person, so I decided to ask Andrea Bonaga to come in forces and help me and start the CoMunYKa project. Here are a couple of shots. The pictures will be used in the upcoming website of the restaurant: http://www.peppinoristorante.com/

Ice cream on february

As many graphics and photographers know, advertising works with a three season advance. This means that for us Saint Valentino is on september and Christmas is on june… and for the transitive property ice creams are on february… brrrrr.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas everybody… what else to say?

Cakes and... cakes

Share

Once againI’ve been at “Impero” to shoot some cakes for their new advertising.  The one I’m posting here today is one I loved shooting because of its name and the idea that generated the shot. Its name is “Mr Honore” and those cream puffs are supposed to be this big chef’s buttons line. Enjoy (I did!)

Never Say Die 2010 - Bologna

Share

PunkRockWorld.it is going to show off his new face and in this weeks we are working hard writing new content and collecting new pictures and live reports for its launch. As Never Say Die tour was hitting Bologna I went there to report the happening. Many thanks go to Matt at Hellfire.

Here are some shots of the event. Just the usual “I was there” shots. The best will be published on PunkRockWorld.it soon.

The Magic Forest

The Magic Forest The Job: 4 Cakes

The situation: The second cake, an autumnal set and a halloweenian atmosphere. The long wait for the subject to defrost and a small placeholder for the descriptive pie. Then, a customer brings away the confectioner: A blue and a CTO gel fly right on the strobes.

The result is a picture who’s just lacking a carved pumpkin and a couple of spiders.

A note for the next year…

NeWestern's Front Page

Share

Today, at the studio where I work, Andrea, the owner, came and gave me a magazine and pointing the front page stated: “this is for you, that picture is one of yours”. I couldn’t figure out the photo nor the paternity but, as we keep all of the reportages’ original files, the evidence of my prefix on the file (PxL_****.CR2) confirmed that.
On the magazine the picture is credited to Andrea Bonaga – andreabonaga.it which is the studio/agency we shoot for at the western shows (and in some kart shows too). Merçi Beaucoup Monsieur Bainaud :D .

Two days with far from finished

Share

Steve Neary from Far From FinishedMy band, Linterno, had a 2 day with the American Punk Rock Band Far From Finished playing in Bologna and in Brescia. We already played with them in 2008 along with Millencolin in their tour date here in Bologna and got in good relationship with them and their European tour manager Jens. In those days they invited us to attend their following tour date in Florence, while today (well, actually yesterday) they hosted our bass player Stanga and me on their tour bus on their way to our next Venue: The Magazzino 47 in Brescia. Useless to say, those guys are great the way you could figure out listening to their records.

Erik Perkins playing with Far From FinishedThis year’s impersonation of the band showed some changes in the lineup giving up the opportunity to meet another old acquaintance: Erik Perkins, No Trigger’s former drummer, whom we played with back in 2007.

Here are two pics from the night at Magazzino 47 in Brescia. On the right Steve Neary an on the left Erik Perkins

Maitres Patissiers' Shooting

Share

ConfictionersThe cooperative who runs the Impero Cafe and Confictionery hired me for a shooting of the confictionary’s chef and deputy. The shooting took us almost an hour to set up 4 different situations all completely strobe lit.

The two chefs have been very kind and it all went through smootly althought there wasn’t enough room to move the lights around without attempting at our own integrity.

This is one of my favourite pictures from the second set: the two chefs perfecting their cakes ans sweets. If I’ve got their requests this will be the pic they will use for their brochure.

Let’s see what will happen :)

Team Penning World Championship

Today, while Italy is moving south, towards the beaches, I’ve been driving towards the north bound, between the Garda Lake and Verona, to realize a reportage of “the finals” day of the Team Pennig World Championship for Cowboys Magazine, the Italian Western Riding Magazine. Here’s a shot from one of the Spain National Team’s go.

Polar Bear Club at Hana-bi (Ravenna)

Yesterday Hana-bi, a beach club on the adriatic coast of Marina di Ravenna, hosted an american band named “Polar Bear Club”. I was there to produce some images for PunkRockWorld.it, the eldest Italian Punk Rock Webzine on the net.
Here are two shots: One of the band’s really energic set.
The other one is of the storm that broke above us just at the same time the band started to play. Luckily the beach party was on a covered area of the beach club and none of us got wet. A couple of song before the end of the show I left the “pit” to enjoy the storm and eventually took a picture of it.

Drop the Monster

Drop the monster…

Today we’ve been at the “monster”, an crumbling building that stands not too far from Bologna’s suburbs. This eco-monster was built 50 Years ago and it was planned to become a Jesuit monastery. It’s now abandoned and we set a shooting inside it. Here there are two shots: the first was taken in the Monster, the second one while we were packing everything in the car to come back home.

Here’s a shot I took of one of the cars Mercedes, being one of the sponsors, put in front of the dinning area.
I played with it a bit but please don’t call it HDR.

Tuning Cars Around

Share

Atlas Tuning Club prizesThis assignment was a funny one. A lot of people/cars to shoot, everyone very committed into tuning and cars, 2 beautiful girls and the hottest sun a photographer with sun lotions and strobes could dare to desire. I had a good time because of most of these factors: they are not shy people (they hunt for photographers, indeed), the two models were very prepared (and everybody was happy to host them in their cars) and easy to direct. On the other side, the sun burnt me to the bones despite the sun lotion with top grade protection.

However, the strobes won the fight, the customer(s) is happy, I’m recovering fast and here are two shots of the day. The first one is about prizes and the importance to partecipate while the second one portrays the two models and a car of its own: the weirdest thing is not the center opening hood, but the playstation 2 that stands in place of the radiator… Look closer!
